The past several years have witnessed a phenomenon in which a variety
of promises have been arising from people in all walks of life.
Regretfully, a lot of promises are nonsense, just as the hen commits
herself to laying eggs which are round.Such false promises can be seen
everywhere in our country. Some administration departments promise to
perform their tasks effectively and fairly; some manufacturing units guarantee to turn
out products of good quality. Can you find anything new other than their obligations in
these “promises”? I presume your answer will be negative. As a matter of fact, their
intentions are nothing but to put on a civilized disguise to deceive the public.
I dare say that corruption and cheat are causing damage to society. But the hen and her
like should know that dishonest behaviors help no one to survive the intense competition
of a market economy system. They should remember the old saying,
“Honesty is the best policy”.
When we use the word “love”, we do not simply mean an attraction to a person of the
opposite sex. The picture illustrates the real meaning of love, by stressing the fact
that love can support us no matter how dark the world becomes. As a matter of fact,
people of many different cultures have regarded love as the most sublime of human
emotions.Take an example to illustrate the power of love. We should remember how
Chinese people help the victims of the earthquake in Sichuan Province in 2008. Although
their incomes are low by international standards, people donated whatever they could to
help their fellow citizens. Furthermore, they did this with no thought of gain.
The best way to show love is to help people who are more unfortunate than we are.
We should always be ready to give a helping hand to those who are in trouble.
Only by doing so can we help to make the world a better place. (164 words)
The picture vividly depicts a lovely American girl in traditional Chinese costume
with a sweet smile on her face. She wears ribbons, necklaces and other accessories.
Undoubtedly, the costume has added oriental charm to her beautiful features.
What the picture conveys goes far beyond a new fashion trend.
In fact, it carries cultural implications as well. The fact that people are attracted to
the Chinese culture indicates that a culture can be accepted and shared internationally.
In other words, a nation’s culture can become international through worldwide exchange.
Since the trend of globalization has become irresistible, cultural exchange can
improve mutual understanding.
National culture should be preserved as a priceless treasure. Meanwhile,
there are good reasons to advocate international culture, for those ideas can provide
a different perspective for us to observe the world. Nevertheless, we should be sensible
enough to absorb its virtues and to resist its dark side. Only in this way can we promote
cultural development positively. (160 words)
The drawings depict the destiny of a flower in different circumstances. As is shown in
the first cartoon, the flower is growing in a greenhouse. On the contrary, when exposed
to the rain, the flower soon fades and withers.
To begin with, the flower growing in the greenhouse cannot withstand the test of the
storm. Yet the symbolic meaning should be taken more seriously. The flower is associated
with young people, while the greenhouse epitomizes parents’ doting care. Once the young
people begin to seek independence and accept challenges from the real world, they are
found too spoiled to be strong enough.
Accordingly, it is vital for us to derive positive implications. On the one hand,
we can use them to aid the youth to be more independent in life. On the other hand,
parents should be sensible enough to give their children more freedom to deal with
problems. Only in this way can young people become winners in this competitive world.
This picture reveals a phenomenon of how elders are treated by their grown-up children
in some families in China. When they are too old to take care of themselves, the elders
become burdens to be kicked around by their sons and daughters like a football.
China and the Chinese people have been practicing filial piety throughout history.
Many stories reiterate this virtue of loving the elders, such as the story of Tiying
who risked her life in order to save her wronged father. Those who try every means
to avoid their duties of looking after their elders should bear in mind that they are
much indebted to their parents. Without the loving care and selfless devotion of their
parents, how could they have grown up healthily and become successful?
Every one of us should live up to the virtues passed down to us by our ancestors. Only
in this way can we be worthy of the name of a Chinese. (160 words)
As is depicted in the photos, Beckham is enjoying popularity among youngsters.
In the first picture, Beckham’s name appears on a young man’s face. In the second
photograph, another young person is getting his hair cut in Beckham’s style.
Undoubtedly, the pictures reflect the phenomenon of idol worship prevalent among
teenagers nowadays. Briefly speaking, young people are inclined to idolize the people
who excel in appearance or talent. Beckham represents the image of a sports hero,
whose appearance and skills are adored by sports fans. Likewise, several girls won their
fame in The 2005 Super Girl Contest in China.
In my opinion, idolatry is a double-edged sword which can exert profound influence
on the growth of young people. If we worship idols by pursuing fashions unreasonably,
the obsession will certainly waste a great deal of our time and money. On the contrary,
if we improve ourselves by bridging the gap between our models and us,
we will lead a positive life.
It is illustrated in the cartoon that a striker is preparing to shoot at the goal
defended by a goalkeeper on a football field. In the goalkeeper’s mind, he is so
much smaller than he is that guarding the goal becomes an impossible mission.
At the same time, the guard seems to fill up the goal in the attacking player’s mind.
The purpose of the drawing is to show us that in the face of challenges, self-confidence
is of great significance. Regardless of how much success one has had in school or at
work, he or she will encounter problems. It is at these times that one’s self-confidence
plays a crucial role in determining whether he can turn failure into victory.
I can think of no better illustration than the following one. Helen Keller was deaf, dumb
and blind. Nevertheless, she went on to conquer her handicaps to become a writer.
This case illustrates that we should never overestimate the difficulties. (162 words)
As is illustrated in the cartoon, people are surfing on line within a spider web.
It seems ironic to present people separated from each other by the spider web when
they attempt to communicate. Undoubtedly, the spider web serves as a symbol of the
Internet, both connecting people and isolating them from each other.
The portrayal reveals the duality of the relationship between man and the Internet.
On the one hand, the Internet is one of the most efficient media used for communication.
As a college student, I get on line every day to discuss news with other people on BBS.
But on the other hand, a good many people admit that they are too addicted to the
Internet to maintain face-to-face contact with their friends.
Hence, it is necessary for us to use the Internet in a reasonable way and restrain from
overindulgence. After all, the Internet was invented to connect you and me rather
than setting barriers to keep people beyond reach. (164 words)
As is portrayed in the cartoon, two tourists are sightseeing on a small boat while
discarding their leftovers into a lake. Unfortunately, the lake is teeming with rubbish.
And below the drawing, there is a caption which says: "after" the travel.
The painter wants to convey such a message: a good many scenic spots are flooded
with visitors, who spoil the beauty of nature by leaving behind God-knows-how-much trash.
On the one hand, tourism is booming everywhere. Some people seem to ignore its negative
effects on the environment. On the other hand, tourism has exerted great pressure on
the environment we are living in.
Undoubtedly, tourism could not be banned in any country,
as it does help to shore up the economy in places which have few sources of income.
However, the main point is that the unchecked growth of the travel business may render
the development of an economy unsustainable.
It is high time that we enhanced people's awareness.(160 words)
As is vividly shown in the cartoon, choosing what to do upon graduation can
be a tough decision. The choice is among finding a job, pursuing postgraduate studies,
going abroad and starting one’s own business. Below the drawing,
there is a caption which says: “Choice”.
When making this decision, students should consider a variety of factors.
The first factor is their own personal preferences. Some students may have dreams of
running their own business. The second factor is their financial situation.
Some students can afford the tuition fees of postgraduate studies or studying overseas,
while for others the expense would be too heavy a financial strain.
The final factor is their intended career. Students who make the wrong choice could end
up wasting their time and money.
When it comes to the decision by university graduates of their next step in life,
there is no one right or wrong choice. Instead, each student
must make his or her own decision. (160 words)
