Teacher's Day
ebrated in June in the 1930s. The "Manifesto on Teachers’Day" explained their hope that th
e holiday would inspire the nation to create better living conditions for teachers; safegu
ard teacher’s work; improve teacher’s qualities. In 1951 the new Chinese government change
d the date to May 1, but as you can imagine, the event was overshadowed by one of China’s
biggest holidays, Labor Day. In December of 1984 the BeijingEvening News published an arti
cle in whichProfessor Wang Zikun proposed that teachers be given their own day to celebrat
e. The idea quickly drew a strong response from readers and a September 10th Teachers’Day
was put into law the following year. Why September 10th? The reason to choose this day is
that when the fall semester begins, a brand new atmosphere will be created if activities o
f respecting teachers and valuing education are held.
