Overall, despite an obvious lift in the second decade, the total number of marriages
showed a general decline with above 350,000 over the time. In addition, the figure
for first marriages fell, while that of remarriages rose in the same period.
Regarding the total marriages, it experienced a noticeable growth and peaked around
450,000, after which there was a stable fall and reached a low of approximately
375,000 in 2001.
Concerning the volumes of specific sorts-first marriages and remarriages,
the two lines exhibited an inverted trend with the former declining and the latter
slowly increasing. Before the year 1971, the figure for first marriages maintained
around 350,000 before slumping swiftly in the later 30 years. Instead, the number
of people who opted to remarry rose, increasing by 50,000 in the final period while
there was an nearly unchanged figure from 1951 to 1981.
