Although the starting point of this argument is reasonable, I still disagree
with it since it is hard to predict which fields of study have the ability to
help student get a great job in the future. In addition, in terms of educational
institutions, only encouraging students to study the “promising" fields and make
money will probably ignore the fundamental thing of education.
The wish to get a good job and make much money is reasonable. Since media always
promotes wealth and whole society pursuit the money, student probably will look forward
to the reward after studying many years. In addition, the fee of study is more and more
expensive, almost students have to consider whether they can get a good job which can
help them make much money. In this situation, if students can choose a promising
field to study, they will have more opportunities to achieve their money dreams after
they graduate.
However, it is hard to predict the potential of fields. Some unpopular major may become
popular after a few years, while it is also possible for some popular fields become
unpopular. It is because scientific research has the strong uncertainty, there are many
technologies and discoveries are found by accident. For example, Alexander Fleming found
the Penicillin during one common experiment. In addition, even if some students choose
the popular fields to study, they still can not get their ideal job. Since if there are a
lot of students choose the same fields, then there will be many talents in the same
fields going to the society in the same time. It will cause the talent saturation and
increase the pressure of competition. In this situation, some students probably could
not find jobs while other fields may lack the talents.
Even if we can predict which field is promising, educational institution still should
maintain the integrity. As the cooperation between the companies and colleges
become deeper and deeper, some people would like to say the college should pay
more attention to the fields which have many applications and can gain much more
interest. However, the company and the government could pursuit the wealth while
the fundamental responsibility of college is imparting knowledge. So they should make
sure the stable development of academic ecology. If educational institution only focus
on some application area, then the fundamental or theoretical research will be ignored.
It will cause no progress in the scientific area, and then the whole society will
stagnate.
In conclusion, educational institution should take their basic responsibility, guide
students to have the healthy attitude on study. It is not college’s task to help students
determine their fields. There is no one popular field all the time, but may has one
always interesting area.
